Please join us this September for the Steps Move Science 2025 VIRTUAL Walk to raise awareness and research funding for Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS). Even though we won’t be walking the same path, we’ll be moving forward together — united in our mission to bring hope, progress, and ultimately, treatment options for those living with SMS.

WHAT: This walk is more than just putting one foot in front of the other — it’s a way to fuel research and spark hope for every individual and family affected by Smith-Magenis Syndrome. To honor the 17th chromosome deletion that causes SMS, we encourage (but don’t require) participants to walk for 17 minutes, 17 blocks, or 1.7 miles. These are just suggestions — any activity that gets you moving, motivated, and fundraising counts! Whether it’s a stroll with friends, a bike ride, a run, or even dancing in your living room, the most important thing is that you join in. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness of SMS and generate the funds needed for critical research to move the science forward toward life-changing treatments.

WHEN: Participate anytime during September — wherever you are — for our Annual Steps Move Science Walk benefiting the SMS Research Foundation.

WHERE: Anywhere that works for you! Your neighborhood, a local park, a hiking trail, or even your own treadmill — every location becomes part of our united, nationwide walk.

WHY: Today, there are still no treatment options for Smith-Magenis Syndrome. This rare genetic disorder affects multiple organ systems and is often accompanied by significant behavioral and cognitive challenges. The SMS Research Foundation is dedicated to advancing groundbreaking research with the goal of developing viable therapies and improving the quality of life for those with SMS. Together, our steps can move science toward real solutions.

HOW: By taking Steps to Move Science! Share your walk on social media with photos or videos, tagging the SMS Research Foundation and using hashtags #stepsmovescience and #smswalk to spread awareness.

You can also donate to our walk by texting SMS to 50155!
